Filling the vulcanizer with the molds

Title

Filling the vulcanizer with the molds

Subject

Tire industry--Massachusetts--Chicopee

Description

A worker presses his hand on a stack of molds while he waits for the cover to be lowered onto the vulcanizer. When the cover is secure, heat and steam will be piped into the vulcanizer, causing the rubber to harden and expand against the molds. This expansion in the molds gave the tire its desired shape including the numbers and lettering on the tire.
