Notary services are provided by the Chicopee Public Library free of charge. Only a small portion of our
staff is certified to provide this service, so the library will not always have a notary public available. To
confirm that a notary public will be available when you visit the library, please email cpl@chicopeepubliclibrary or call 413-594-1800 x3 before you leave home.
Up to five (5) documents can be notarized per visit.
Staff Notaries will not notarize any documents that require specialized legal, financial, or technical
knowledge and are prohibited from helping you prepare, complete, or understand legal documents.
Therefore, notary services are not available at the library for deeds, mortgages, wills, living wills, living
trusts, codicils, or depositions. Staff Notaries cannot provide copy certification for government issued
IDs, immigration forms and certificates, or vital records. These documents are best handled at law
offices, real estate offices, or town offices. If you have questions about whether we can notarize your
documents, please call ahead. For more information on state guidelines, click HERE.
Documents in any language other than English cannot be notarized at this facility.
Massachusetts law requires that the Notary and the person seeking notarization must be able to
communicate directly with one another. Interpreters cannot be used.
In accordance with Massachusetts Notarial Law, Notaries will not provide service if the individual making
the request, the document, or the circumstances of the request raise any issue of authenticity, doubt, or
uncertainty. In any of these events, the Notary may, at their sole discretion, decline to provide Notary
service.
If the document does not contain the appropriate Notarial Statement or Clause, one will be attached to
the document by the Notary.
Before your appointment:
- Be sure the documents are completed and ready for signature. You must sign in the presence of the notary, so don’t sign or date the document until instructed by the Notary. Library staff cannot help you complete any documents.
- All signers must be physically present and must have proper ID (state-issued ID, license,
- passport, or other government-issued photo ID).
- If witnesses are required for your document, you must bring them with you. The library will not provide witnesses and witnesses may not be solicited from patrons using the library
