Join the Chicopee Historical Society at the Chicopee Public Library on Wednesday, November 20 at 6:30pm for a showing and discussion of the short film Cowboy 57 (1959). The film is about an average day at Westover Air Force Base when it was part of Strategic Air Command and follows a real B-52 bomber crew as Maj. Gerald McKay of Chicopee Falls hopes to return from a routine mission in time for his daughter's recital.Narrated by actor Jimmy Stewart!Chicopee Historical Society

Families are also encouraged to take advantage of our free Holiday Photobooth, located on our lower level and available through mid-December. The answer to What Is It Wednesday:A card, in this case part of a friendship album that was started in 1851. Friendship albums were popular in the 19th century, and functioned a bit like our high school yearbooks: friends would sign them, frequently including fond sentiments to the album's owner. Some--though not this one--contain locks of hair exchanged as tokens of affection. This album belonged to Electa Buckland (later Taylor; 1836-1926). Electa was born in Connecticut, but lived in Chicopee Falls for most of her life. Her brother-in-law George was Chicopee's first Mayor. The answer to What Is It Wednesday: The marble desk nameplate of Rear Admiral Frances Shea (later Frances Shea Buckley). Born in Chicopee in 1929, RADM Shea was a veteran of both the Korean War and Vietnam as a surgical nurse; a Naval OR supervisor; and Director of Nursing at two Naval medical centers. Shea was active from 1951-1954, briefly on reserve while she attended graduate school, and returned to active Navy duty from 1960-1983. Among several other honors and roles, she was selected to be the Director of the Navy Nurse Corps in 1979, and was the first Navy Nurse Corps Office and second woman to be promoted to the two star flag officer rank. She also received over a dozen awards and commendations. She passed in 2015. Come visit us in the Chicopee Room to see this and other historical items and records; no appointment needed!
